Rural Oasis

Mulgoa, NSW:

The outer western suburb of Mulgoa in Sydney is well known for its dry Mediterranean-type climate, and gardeners and farmers alike have struggled with the challenges this brings for years. Our response has been to create a garden environment that draws inspiration from the Mediterranean region itself and tune it into the local context rather than try fight the climate. Extending out from the pseudo-Spanish style house the garden echoes a mix of Spanish and Islamic geometry to give the intended atmosphere. A pillared gazebo guarded by lush and striking planting takes centre stage and views out to the magnificent rolling pasture of the property. Thereon a grand overarching arbour with grape vine planting allows users to stroll in serenity. The experience continues down from a grand set of sandstone steps that lead to either the open renewed grass areas dotted with mature palm trees or into the green access way and central courtyard. Taking a spherical form, the courtyard invites users into a shaded epicentre of natural stone and timber. Out-of-eye access is also provided to the renewed driveway to the east from the courtyard. On second glance, the garden sits entirely within the landscape rather than on it and tames the local climate into the design.
